Motivation is a Myth: Here’s What Really Matters

What Truly Drives an Olympian and Mom

As a three-time Olympian and mom, I’ve learned that relying on motivation alone is a setup for disappointment. Instead, here’s what has consistently driven me toward success.

  1. Create Systems, Not Just Goals
Systems ensure I stay on track, whether it’s training for the Olympics or running a household. They’re the scaffolding that supports my goals.
  2. Discipline Over Desire
Motivation fades, but discipline lasts. It’s about doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like it. That’s how medals are won and how life’s races are run.
  3. Accountability Keeps Me Honest
I share my goals with friends, coaches, and you—my community. Knowing you’re all rooting for me gives me an extra push to not let you down.
  4. Challenges Are Opportunities
Every hurdle is a chance to grow stronger, smarter, and more resilient. I teach this to my kids and remind myself of it daily.
  5. Track Your Progress
I celebrate every step forward, no matter how small. It’s about progress, not perfection, and recognizing your growth is crucial.

Motivation might get you started, but it’s the robust systems and a disciplined approach that keep you moving forward. Check out my video where I share more about what truly keeps me going.
